From Michael.Weil at ColoState.EDU Sat May 17 17:46:18 2008 From: Michael.Weil at ColoState.EDU (Weil,Michael) Date: Sat May 17 21:23:43 2008 Subject: [rat-forum] Faculty Position in Cancer Genetics Message-ID: <8FE01041D3BA0343AAFC6DE91D31CE5491FA0D1571@EVS1.ColoState.EDU> Position Description: Cancer Geneticist Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Colorado State University The Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences is seeking a Cancer Geneticist for a nine-month, tenure track position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in the application of modern genetic methodologies to advancing the understanding of etiology, diagnosis and/or therapy of cancer. He/she will have experience or specific interest in developing a research program related to canine cancers. Candidates must have earned a doctoral degree in a field related to biomedical science. Postdoctoral experience is preferred and demonstrated expertise in genetics is required. Candidates seeking appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level are expected to have records of research productivity, including active externally funded projects, commensurate with those ranks. The individual filling this position will have the opportunity to work closely with cancer biologists and oncologists in the Departments of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences (ERHS) and Clinical Sciences through association with CSU's Animal Cancer Center (ACC), a world leader in the treatment and study of cancer in companion animals. The successful candidate will be expected to bridge this basic science faculty position in ERHS with the opportunity in the ACC to create new avenues for clinical and translational research. The cancer geneticist will also find opportunities for collaborations with epidemiologists, biostatisticians and environmental toxicologists in ERHS and the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in CSU's College of Natural Sciences. Close ties between the ACC and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Colorado create additional avenues for collaborations with the cancer biologists and geneticists at that institution. The person filling this position will be expected to maintain an externally funded research program in cancer genetics and biology. This may include studies of cancer causation and risk, diagnosis and experimental therapeutics. Relevant research areas include identification of heritable and somatic mutations involved in cancers, genetic risk factors for canine cancer, gene-environment interactions, use of molecular genetic tools for diagnosis, development of new therapeutic targets, molecular approaches for the design of individualized therapies based on genetic analysis and prediction and monitoring of therapeutic efficacy. Translational research applications of canine cancer genetics advances are of special interest. The ACC occupies a new wing of the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) which offers outstanding research laboratories available for the person filling this position. The clinics of the ACC attract a large number of patients, providing opportunities for conducting clinical trials and genetic epidemiological studies of naturally occurring canine cancers. A tissue bank containing tumor and normal tissues is available in the ACC. The faculty of the ERHS Diagnostic Imaging section provide outstanding capabilities in radiography, CT, MRI and ultrasound that can support clinical and research needs in canine oncology. The ACC also offers advanced radiation therapy treatments under the direction of an ERHS faculty member. The person filling this position will be expected to contribute to the teaching activities of the department. This will include lecturing in existing cancer biology courses and developing a new graduate cancer genetics course. The new cancer geneticist will serve as an adviser to graduate students and participate in training oncology residents at the VMC. Service on department, college and university committees will be part of this position's commitment. The faculty member will also be expected to serve the scientific community as a member of professional societies and be involved in organizing conferences, workshops and symposia. Individuals interested in applying for this position should send a letter describing their interest in the position and research and teaching goals, a curriculum vitae and names and contact information for at least three references to: Cancer Genetics Search Committee, c/o Julie Asmus, Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, Colorado State University, 1618 Campus Delivery, Fort Collins, CO 80523. Evaluation of applications will begin on July 1, 2008 and continue until a suitable candidate is identified. Inquiries about this position may be directed to julie.asmus@colostate.edu or 970-491-5222.
