There was a paper published in BOR November 26 2008 By Yasunari Seita.
Also at the MGI list not long ago we have an answer on the same question:
The National Bio Resource Project for the Rat in Japan (NBRP-Rat) is one of the largest worldwide resource center, collecting, preserving and supplying of unique rat strains. We have collected over 500 rat strains, characterizing their phenotypes and genotypes, cryopreserving their embryos and sperm, and distributing the collected rat strains to researchers.

We have successfully recovered rat frozen sperm by AI (Artificial
Insemination) and ICSI. We have also made a DVD protocol for cryopreservation of embryos and sperm. If you were interesting in our technologies, please contact us via website.

In my lab, if that can help you, we freeze embryos, and works really well.

Subject: [rat-forum] Rat sperm cryopreservation
Does anyone have information regarding the freezing down of rat sperm and whether the technique is similar to freezing mouse embryos?
