Steve, You might want to try cisternal puncture to get the CSF fluid.
Please find the detail procedure using HB Waynforth & PA Flecknell
(2nd edition,Academic Press 1992). Bear in mind, it might contaminate
with blood, and it requires a lot of practice to perfect doing it.
